BCRMTA Richmond Branch Trophy Information

Richmond RMT Trophies are awarded in the disciplines of piano, string, woodwinds and voice for the highest mark in each grade of the Royal Conservatory of Music exams.

Submitting entries - applications are accepted based on the following criteria:
* Student receive a minimum mark of 80 on the exam & had been studying with the teacher for at least a year. Teacher must be a member of the Richmond branch for at least a year.
* A clear copy of the student’s examination result must accompany the application; late entry will not be accepted
* Information provided on the application is complete and legible

The following options have been discontinued:
* Internet print outs
* E-mail correspondence
* Telephone messages
* Faxes

Linda Niamath Scholarships

The Linda Niamath Scholarships are awarded to students studying with teachers who are members of the BCRMTA – Richmond Branch. This year’s scholarships will be awarded to three students studying piano at the Grade One to Three levels. The music must be at the Grade One to Three level, chosen from any of the following Canadian Syllabi:

• Conservatory Canada - 1999 Edition
• RCM – 2001 Edition - September printing
• RCM - 2008 Edition

Students are required to memorize and perform 3 contrasting pieces of music by 3 different Canadian composers. The maximum performance time is 5 minutes. The recorded performance and completed applications will be accepted until Friday, October 17, 2008. Students are required to submit a DVD of their memorized performances along with the Linda Niamath 2008 Piano Scholarship application form (Acrobat PDF). Each teacher may submit up to 3 students.

All scholarship applicants are required to perform by memory, one of their chosen pieces, at the BCRMTA-Richmond Branch Canada Music Week Recital, Sunday, November 16, 2008. Location: Richmond Presbyterian Church, 7112 #2 Road. Time: 1:30 – 3:30pm.

All applicants will receive a personal written response from Linda Niamath. All DVDs will be returned to the applicants at the conclusion of the recital. Scholarship winners will be chosen by Linda Niamath and announced at the conclusion of the recital. There will be ample time for pictures and autographs.

These winners received a personal letter from Linda Niamath, and a signed copy of her “Bears” and “Giraffes.” Linda’s husband kindly took an amazing amount of photos for our Branch of this special occasion. They are on a disc and are available upon request. The singing of “O Canada” was a very inspiring start to the Recital and each student was given a Canadian Flag and pin, compliments of our MP’s office in Richmond and Delta.

About the Scholarship Contributor
Linda Niamath was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has enjoyed composing since the age of five, when she started piano lessons. She holds an ARCT in Piano Performance from The Royal Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. As a music specialist, she taught elementary school in Vancouver before establishing her own private studio.

While focusing primarily on composing for young pianists, Linda Niamath has also written for ballet and animated films. She has a keen interest in early childhood education, believing in the importance of introducing all young children to the joys of music making.

Recognized as one of North America’s leading pedagogical composers, Linda Niamath continues to write albums of descriptive pieces to aid young pianists in the development of their technical and interpretive skills. (Source: Frederick Harris Music)

  Winifred Proud Scholarship

The Winifred Proud Piano Scholarships application form is due February 6th, 2009. A scholarship of $50 will be awarded to each of the following: Grade 9 & 10 Piano student achieving the highest mark in the RCM in 2008. Theory requirements must be fulfilled for both grades. The deadline for the marks for piano & the required theory co-requisites must be received by Feb 6, 08. To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must have a mark of 80 or above from the RCM. The student receiving the award must be studying with the teacher of the Richmond Branch of BCRMTA.

Please mail all documents to the above address & attention to Mary Ann Cayetano & Ildiko Skeldon-Huber (Re: Winifred Proud Scholarship). The recepients of the Grade 9 & 10 award are required to perform in the Advanced Students Recital (March 28 – Sat 7pm at Broadmoor Baptist Church).


About the Scholarship Contributor:

A founding member of the Richmond Branch in 1964, Winifred Proud served as the first President for two terms and helped launch the first Richmond Branch student recital. Being a music pedagogue throughout her life, at age 99, Mrs. Proud was one of the finalists for Wisdom of Age Mentorship Award (Leisure Care Lighthouse Awards program in the Lower Mainland), “given to an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to making a difference in the lives of children.”  (Source: Richmond Branch Archive, The Vancouver Sun)

Richmond Branch Scholarships 08-09

Richmond Branch Scholarships are awarded biennially. Eligible students must have studied with a Richmond Branch teacher and obtained the highest mark in the discipline of piano, strings, woodwinds or voice. Results from the following exam boards will be accepted:

* Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM)
* London College
* Kelly Kirby Music Society

Richmond Branch Community Service Scholarships

As a part of the Richmond Branch Scholarship Awards, a community service category was added in 2004 to acknowledge those students who give their time and talents to the community. To be eligible, the student must be studying with a member of the Richmond Branch of the BCRMTA. There are numerous ways the student can qualify – playing at seniors’ homes, at church, or anywhere in the community where they volunteer their musical skills. Students may also assist a musical organization such as a music festival or competition, Branch events, or a concert association. A minimum of 35 hours will be required for the Richmond Branch Service Award. The students with the three highest hours of service between January 1st to December 31st, 2008 will each receive $25 and a certificate. Presentation of scholarship is scheduled at the Advanced Students Recital (March 28th, 2009).
