April 7, 2021 – General Meeting 9:30 AM; Guest Speaker 10:30AM: Victoria Warfield on Understanding Performance Anxiety: Creating a Musician Without Fear via Zoom.

Brief Synopsis: Performance anxiety, sometimes referred to as stage fright, is a normal physiological response.  Young musicians need to work against their body’s natural instincts to ‘fight-or-flee’.  They also need to overcome their desire for comfort and a sense of self-worth. The stress of being alone in the spotlight and baring themselves for judgement requires a special set of skills. Fortunately, these are skills that can be taught and used along side of their skills as a musician.  It’s important to explore the ways that these performance anxiety symptoms are manifested in our students.  We have a responsibility to keep them emotionally healthy and give them skills to use in other aspects of their lives – to be successful in whatever they choose to do.  We are responsible for keeping them physically healthy, being mindful of the damage that anxiety can place on young and developing bodies.

Bio: Victoria Warfield is an energetic and passionate speaker on Performance Anxiety. Throughout her teaching career Victoria has dealt with the reality of performance anxiety in students. She embraces the importance of using a wide range of techniques and solutions to make the student enjoy their musical experience and be as successful as they can be.  This workshop will add to the skills at your disposal to do mindful work with students of any age and effectively support their needs. Her background of teaching special needs children and children with developmental disabilities has given her insight into performing with all its challenges and made her a much sought-after resource in the community.

Miss Warfield has given recitals throughout Canada and the United States as a soloist and chamber performer.  She has directed several choirs.  In addition, she has been active in musical theatre as a director, producer, and composer/arranger.  Participating at all levels of music competitions, Miss Warfield has acted as an adjudicator, as well as a co-ordinator and organizer of music festivals.  She is past president of the Clef Society of Burnaby and current president of the B. C. Registered Music Teachers’ Association – Richmond Branch.
